Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a pneumonia which develops in patients who have been on mechanical ventilation for over 48 hours.
About Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)
Pneumonia has accounted for approximately 15% of all hospital-associated infections ,27% of all infections acquired in medical intensive-care unit (CCU)and 24% in coronary care units. It has been the second most common hospital-associated infection after that of the urinary tract.
The primary risk factor for the development of hospital-associated bacterial pneumonia is mechanical ventilation (with its requisite endotracheal intubation).
